IV Sedation

While many people have a fear of coming to the dentist, this fear should not interfere with your health. Why risk having cavities, decay, and gum disease? Don’t avoid coming to the dentist any longer; there is a better way.

IV sedation and anesthesia services in our office can be used for patients who are incredibly nervous. We understand that getting your teeth cleaned isn’t everyone’s favorite thing. In fact, you can even ask Dr. Will how he feels about it! Even though his parents are both dentists, he has had his fair share of cavities, and his parents wouldn’t describe him as the best patient.

It’s because of this that we know just how important it is to come in and have your teeth cleaned. If you skip your preventative appointments because you are scared, let’s talk. We want to make you feel confident and calm with every visit to our office.

How can sedation dentistry help me?

IV sedation during your dental procedures allows you to feel completely numb to any of our wor. Most patients who use IV sedation don’t even remember the procedure at all!

While you are awake and conscious throughout the procedure, and you may even talk to Dr. Will, you most likely will not remember any of the dental work. Most importantly, you certainly won’t feel anything.

If you are a very nervous patient, we can use the IV sedation method to keep you feeling comfortable the entire time you are in the chair. We invite you to come in, kick back, and relax – you are in good hands with our team.

What is a typical sedation procedure like?

Picture this: a patient comes in for a basic, preventative dentistry checkup. We discover during this exam that the patient needs two fillings, a crown, and a tooth extraction.

The patient feels nervous and overwhelmed by the amount of work that needs to be done. We reassure the patient that, while this feels like a big change for their smile, the work is really quite simple! Still, the patient doesn’t want to remember anything about the procedure and wants to have the work done as quickly as possible.

At this point, we offer sedation dentistry as a solution. The patient is interested and wants to move forward with sedation. Next, we schedule an appointment for the sedation date and procedures.

The IV sedation is administered intravenously, and Dr. Will can determine how much or how little sedation medicine is needed for the patient. Once the medicine sets in, Dr. Will can get to work, as the patient just sits back.

Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Will cuts the sedation off, and allows the patient to adjust back to feeling more normal. It may take some time for the patient’s sedation to wear off. Because of this, we ask that sedation dentistry patients have a driver to pick them up after the procedure is complete.

What are the advantages of IV sedation?

IV sedation has plenty of pros:

  • Makes you completely numb to treatment
  • Allows you to not even remember the treatment
  • Allows you to be semi-awake for the treatment, but relaxed enough to not mind
  • Helps patients who are extremely anxious
  • Keeps patients with a bad gag reflex from gagging during the procedure
  • Works quickly and wears off quickly, allowing patients to get in, out, and back to their day!

If you are an anxious patient, IV sedation may be right for you. To learn about the advantages that you can enjoy from this treatment, give us a call today.

What are my options for anesthesia?

IV sedation is offered for those who are incredibly anxious about dental treatment. If you are someone who is only slightly nervous or if you have a more complicated procedure, we recommend a less invasive route.

Nitrous oxide – more commonly referred to as “laughing gas” or “silly gas” – gives you a nice, numb feeling for your procedure. It is administered through a gas mask, where Dr. Will can adjust the amount of gas for you, until you feel calm and comfortable.

If you are not a very nervous person and simply want to get your procedure completed, a local anesthetic is very effective. With the help of a little shot, the treatment area becomes completely numb and allows Dr. Will to get to work fast.

Depending upon the complexity of your procedure and your level of anxiety, we can help you weigh the options that are best for you! Everyone is different, and we want to work with you to make you feel great before, during, and after your treatment.
