What Are Implant-Retained Dentures?

Understanding the Basics

Implant-retained dentures can be used to replace your upper, lower, or both arches of your teeth. This may be necessary if you have lost most or all of your natural teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay, or a serious accident.

While traditional dentures fit directly over your gums and are kept in place by friction, implant-retained dentures are held in place by 4-6 dental implants. These implants are placed into the arches of your teeth and given time to heal properly to form a sturdy base for your dentures. Once your implants have bonded with your oral tissues, the implant-retained denture snaps onto the implants, providing a stable and secure hold.

Why Choose Implant-Supported Dentures?

The Unique Benefits

Compared to traditional dentures, implant-supported dentures have a number of great benefits. First and foremost, they will never slip or move while you’re wearing them, because they are securely anchored to dental implants that are permanently bonded to your jaw. This makes it easier to do things like eat your favorite foods, speak clearly, and smile without worrying if your dentures will shift or slip. They are much more stable, providing you with more comfort and convenience.

Another great benefit of implant-supported dentures is that they support the health of your jaw and gums. Once you’ve lost your teeth, the force of biting and chewing is no longer transmitted through your teeth to your jaw, so your jaw bone tends to weaken and deteriorate, which can lead to the loss of bone structure and change the appearance of your face. However, dental implants stimulate and preserve your jaw bone, which keeps your mouth healthy and prevents the bone loss that is usually associated with losing teeth.

How Do Implant-Supported Dentures Work?

An Overview of the Process

If you’re having implant-supported dentures placed, you’ll first need to have your remaining teeth extracted. Once your mouth heals, you’ll come in for a second appointment at Will Jones Dentistry. Dr. Jones will develop an implant plan based on precise scans of your mouth and place 4-6 implants in the upper, lower, or both arches of your teeth. Then, a temporary overdenture will be attached to your implants.

You’ll wear this for about 3-6 months while the implants heal. Once your implants have healed and completely bonded with your surrounding gum tissue, Dr. Will will work with a dental lab to create a permanent set of implant-supported dentures. Then, you’ll come in for an appointment to have the fit of your dentures checked. If everything looks good, they’ll be placed. Dr. Will will give you instructions about how to care for them, and you can enjoy your new smile for years to come.
