What Are the Benefits
of Sedation Dentistry?
First and foremost, sedation dentistry allows people with dental anxiety to get the care they need without feeling anxious. According to some studies, up to 60% of people suffer from fear of the dentist.
Whether you have a serious dental phobia, or are just nervous about an upcoming dental procedure like having a dental implant, sedation dentistry can keep you calm and relaxed.Sedation dentistry can also help you overcome other issues, such as a fear of needles (which can make numbing your mouth difficult) as well as mitigating strong gag reflexes. Sedation can also help keep you comfortable even during an extended appointment that lasts several hours. With sedation, you can relax and avoid any pain or discomfort during your appointment.
Relax in the Dentist’s Chair
Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)
Laughing gas is a great option if you do not want to be sedated heavily. Nitrous oxide and oxygen are administered through a nose mask by Dr. Will. Nitrous oxide has anti-anxiety and pain-relieving effects. Most patients feel a bit “floaty” and euphoric while receiving nitrous oxide, hence the term “laughing gas.”The effects of nitrous oxide only last a few minutes after you stop breathing the gas, and it has few side effects, mostly limited to a headache or slight dizziness. This is a good option for patients who prefer to drive themselves home after treatment.
Sleep Through Your Appointment
IV sedation uses powerful sedative drugs which are administered intravenously through an IV, allowing you to sleep through your entire dental procedure. You will not be completely unconscious and you can breathe on your own during IV sedation. After your treatment is complete, you will slowly wake up on your own as the sedation wears off. You will likely not remember anything about your procedure. Because it takes longer for the effects to completely wear off, you will not be able to drive yourself home after your procedure. Be sure to make arrangements for transportation.
With General Anesthesia
General anesthesia provides a deep state of sedation and is usually only used for very invasive procedures and complex oral surgeries. You will be completely unconscious during the procedure so you will need a ventilator to assist your breathing. Dr. Will is experienced with this type of anesthesia, so you will be in good hands. For more information about general anesthesia and to see if it’s an option for your surgery, contact the team at Will Jones Dentistry.
